Why It’s So Difficult to Get Rid of an Old Mattress

When you sleep on the same mattress every day for years, it’s bound to develop stains. Many charitable organizations won’t accept used mattresses for this reason alone. Other agencies have become much stricter about accepting used mattresses since the bed bug scare happened in the United States a few years back.

Because they’re also impossible to throw in the garbage, some homeowners resort to storing old mattresses in the garage or basement and then end up hauling it with them when they move. They find it difficult to sell and even putting a free sign on the mattress and putting it at the end of their driveway doesn’t seem to help.

That doesn’t mean your old mattress is going to end up in a landfill when we take it off your hands. We work with several local recycling agencies that use as much of the material as possible. They dispose of anything they can’t use in a manner that causes the least possible disruption to our natural resources. This includes the safe disposal of chemicals contained within the mattress or its parts.

Other Options for Mattress Disposal

If you’re the creative type, you can consider re-purposing your old mattress. For example, you can use the springs to make an ornament or wine rack, the padding for a cat or dog bed, or the fabric for cushion covers. While it will be more challenging than donating other types of furniture, you can always check with Salvation Army, Goodwill, and similar types of charitable organizations to see if the organization will accept it. If so, you should be prepared to deliver it yourself.

High school and local theater groups may be able to use the old mattress, headboard, frame, or other parts for props. It could be worth a shot to call a few in your area to find out. If you want to recycle as much of the bed as possible, you can take it apart and arrange for separate drop-off of each of the parts. Just keep in mind this option will be more time-consuming than calling EZ Junk Hauling to come and get the bed for you.
